L Ron Hubbard was a hack sci-fi writer who was 'a nut'

Anyway, in his alleged insanity he founded an incredibly lucrative pseudo-scientific religion. Scientology.Scientology poster by Anonymous9000

There have been many controversies linked to this 'batshit insane' organisation. Including suspicious deaths such as that of Lisa McPherson. Recently allegations of widespread physical abuse surfaced.

Scientologists believe that 75 million years ago an alien overlord called Xenu summoned billions of his citizens together for a false tax inspection, then he dropped hydrogen bombs on them and trapped their released souls. These souls are called thetans. They cling to us and make all the bad things in the world happen. Only scientologists know how to get these stubborn souls off.

Sources (various) see Wikipedia

Scientologists don't talk about Xenu, it is their belief that this story is ultra top secret and it will make the heads of the uninitiated (the process of initiation costs tens of thousands of dollars, of course) explode. Although curiously it didn't make my head explode, which MUST mean that I am already operating at the highest level of Scientological development, and which means I don't have to spend the $$$$ to develop in the Church's structure.

Hurray for not being made to explode by bad science fiction!

Here is an interview with a former scientologist which makes interesting reading.

For more information see Operation Clambake, lots of good stuff for those who are interested.

Cairo mosques A Kurdish Turk from Woodford Green, London, has been accused of murdering his daughter in a so called 'honour killing'.

Honour killing is a misnomer. It is better named a shame killing. Or just murder.

There is no honour in killing your daughter because she was raped, or because she loves someone not acceptable to your plans.

There is nothing but shame. Ugly, stupid, shame.

Crazy things people believe: 1. Young Earth

Faith.  It is like when you know something, except without any proof. Also, if there is proof that shows that what you think is wrong (like Dinosaur bones) you still don't change your mind.  That is why faith is better than science.  It doesn't allow for being wrong, even when it is proved to be so.angel

So, what are some of the craziest...I mean best...things that people of faith believe?

1. Creationists (mainly Christian) maintain that the Earth is less than 7,000 years old.

Science, using measurement and calculation puts the rough age of the Earth at about 4.54 billion years old (45,400,000,000).  This is based on the radiometric dating of rocks.  Zircon crystals in Australia have been dated at about 4.4 billion years old, they are the oldest known Earthly material.  Light spectrum analysis of the stars shows that they are also about the same age.

Balderdash! Cry the creationists.  The Bible is the literal word of God, so all you need to do to know how old the Earth is, is to add up all the dates.

Luckily, the Anglican Primate (not a concession to Darwin, some term for an Archbishop) James Ussher did so in the 17th Century, and found that the Earth was created at nightfall preceding Sunday October 23, 4004 BC.

In the course of his studies, he also found that Herod died in 4BC so Christ must have been born anytime between 37 BC and 4BC.

There now exists in America a Creation Museum. On their website the fact that they believe the Earth to be 6000 years old is elusive, but insinuated: 'Biblical history is the key to understanding dinosaurs'.  It is what they, as evangelical creationists, believe.  Apparently there were Dinosaurs on Noah's ark.

Other people who had previously come to similar approximate conclusions (the Earth being about 6000 years old) include the Astronomer Johannes Kepler, and Isaac Newton.

Incidentally, Newton had all sorts of far-fetched ideas, he was an avid Bible scholar and he even predicted (using the Bible as his source) that the world would end (Christ would return) in 2060 or thereabouts.  He had a passion for Alchemy, and in particular the ability to turn base lead into gold.  After his death, his body was found to be riddled with mercury, probably from his alchemical pursuits, which suggests that he may well have been suffering from mercury poisoning in his later years.

Here are some 'Young Earth' arguments and responses, from Tim Thompson

Top of the Popes

I realise that I criticise religion a lot, but I do think it is important to recognise the distinction between religion as a manifestation of people's desire to be good and to form communities, and the cynical oppression and manipulation of those same people by hypocritical and elitist orders that have appropriated faith to their own financial, political or social agendas.

So, I have decided to compile a list of things that I like about religion:

1. Jesus wooden cross with Jesus on it

There is hardly any historical evidence of his life, even in the New Testament Bible the Gospels that tell of him were written decades after his death, the earliest being that of Mark (AD 70) and the latest being that of John.  But that doesn't matter.  The myth of Jesus is extremely beautiful.  That there was a man, a Jew, who looked at the religion and state of his time and saw hypocrisy - saw the priests living in high luxury and demanding money for their services.  So he, as a Rabbi (teacher) took the ideals of religion to the excluded; the poor, the prostitutes, the mad, the sick, the lame.  He preached of kindness, of justice, of love.  He eased the suffering of those around him and turned none away.  He could make a handful of loaves and a handful of fishes seem like a feast, he could make water as intoxicating as wine.  He was kind, and fierce, and challenged the status quo, and eventually was put to death by the rich - the priestly classes of the Jewish order and the Roman rulers for doing so.  Later other rich hypocrites would use his memory as the emblem of their church, which is sad, when you think about it.  Still, the idea of Jesus is a great and beautiful one.

2. Mevlevi, or 'whirling dervishes'

Sufism is the 'mystical' aspect of Islam, and the Mevlevi is an order of Sufi who believe in performing their 'dhikr' (remembrance of God) in the form of a giddy dance.  This dance embodies the motion of objects such as planets, but also the spiritual journey of man from ego to the nirvana like 'perfect'.  It seems to me a pretty cool way of demonstrating your faith, and is probably fun too.  As children we used to spin around in the playground until we fell over dizzy, the Mevlevi do this as their worship.

3. Meditation

The practice of meditation has been shown to have beneficial effects on the mind, see this article in the New Scientist. Buddhists and Hindus have long been practicing it as part of their attempts to overcome the pitfalls of human fallibility and desire.  I think it is a very useful exercise.

4. Scientific progress

I know, it seems ironic when you have such shameful episodes as books being burnt and censored, or modern creationists claiming the Earth is 6000 years old, or Galileo being forced to recant that the Earth goes round the Sun by the Catholic church. But the fact of the matter is that because the Church and the Priests of various religions have had so much money and so much power, they have also had a lot of access to knowledge and experiment, and by being removed from the struggle of manual labour etc. many ordained individuals have had the luxury of freedom to explore ideas that have led to scientific discoveries.  Gregor Mendel, for instance, was a monk who wrote on genetic inheritability amongst pea plants. An idea that feeds into Dawkins' Selfish Gene, and bolsters Darwin's own Origin of species.  Islamic astronomers took the findings of the ancient Greeks and kept them alive and developed them when Europe was in the thrall of the dark ages.

5. Architecture

The buildings that have been made in glory to the various Gods of the world are in many cases extraordinarily wonderful.  From the Pyramids erected to the memories of the 'living Gods', Pharoahs, to the Notre Dame cathedral, or the Hagia Sofia, or the now demolished Buddhas of Bamyan.  The idea of there being a greater being than man has led to some beautiful and grand works.

to be continued...

Acid attacks on girls for going to school

Just what is the Taliban's problem?

This psychotic, misogynist, fanatical bunch of bearded maniacs seem threatened by anything that even vaguely challenges their flat earth religious hysteria.  Their Sharia law an inhumane justification for intolerant, savage behaviour.

So, they blew up the Buddhas of Bamyan, because they perceived them as false idols, depicting as they did the object of another culture's reverence.  So they indiscriminately slaughtered 8000 Hazara people, ostensibly for apostasy (not believing the same version of Islam as them, the Hazara being Shia and the Taliban being Sunni).

And now it appears that they are throwing acid in the face of children.  For what reason?  For being female and having the audicity to want to go to school.

This piece in the International Herald and Tribune details the situation.

RAWA is an independent political/social organization of Afghan women fighting for human rights and for social justice in Afghanistan.

Quick inspiration

Many people need desperately to receive this message: I feel and think much as you do, care about many of the things you care about, although most people do not care about them. You are not alone - Kurt Vonnegut jr

What's going on?

What are you listening to at the moment?

Everything.

What are you working on at the moment?

A painting of a raven and a pomegranate

And noodling about on the guitar
