What are you listening to at the moment?

If you have Spotify (download it, it's free and a very useful way of listening to music) you can listen to a playlist of what I like at the moment

A whole load of music from Glastonbury, for instance, the Boss, No Surrender.

The Gaslight Anthem, We came to dance

Boxer Rebellion, Evacuate

Noah and the Whale, 5 years time

What are you reading at the moment?

Fugitive Pieces by Anne Michaels.  Partly excellent, not sure about it - the poetic writing seems inappropriate, and also to thin, in places. Will see how it goes.

What are you thinking about at the moment?

Rings. Blown by whales

and by volcanoes

Paradox 1 - Buddhism, desiring to end desire

ornate doorSiddharta Gautama, the Buddha, taught that all existence is suffering, and that all suffering is predominantly caused by want - or desire. In order to be free of suffering, we must rid ourselves of wanting.

The precepts seem quite sensible, but there is a paradox here.

We are told that we must end suffering by ending wanting.

But wanting to end suffering is in itself a further want.

So, by wanting to decrease our suffering we are actually increasing it.

John Visvader refers to this as an uroboric (like a snake swallowing its own tail) philosophy.

Wayne Alt argues that there is no paradox

Al Herman replies to Wayne Alt

Britain fought and won against fascists in the second world war. British young men volunteered to fight to defeat fascism in the Spanish civil war.  That is a Britain to be proud of.

how we learn

That the British National Party has gained two seats in the European Parliament is disgraceful.

That one of the seats goes to a fully fledged Nazi, Andrew Brons, is almost beyond belief.

What can I do?

Most simply, vote.

Sign a petition to be handed to the European parliament, stating that the BNP do not represent you.

If you are a BNP voter and are deluding yourself that they are not fascists, then you may want to open your eyes to Searchlight, the magazine that monitors fascistic and extremist activity.  This article from the Stop the BNP explains why.

In this Guardian article, leading historians put things into perspective.
